Golf Zone: Brilliant Mapwanya wins Libreville Golf Open

Mapwanya has had a good year so far after he won the NAC HIV and Cancer Drive tournament back in March while he finished third at the Universal Classic Championship last month.

Zimbabwean professional golfer Visitor Mapwanya shot a final round 4 - under 68 to win the 39th edition of the Libreville Golf Open with an incredible 15 – under par total at Libreville Golf Club, Gabon on Sunday.

After missing out on the FBC Zimbabwe Open under unclear circumstances earlier in the month, Makwanya was on top of his as he carded 67, 69, 69 and 68 to win the event by four shots.

The victory in Gabon meant that the Renco Mine - born golfer, walked away with the 5 million West African CFA franc (approximately US$8 300) winners cheque.

Mapwanya has had a good year so far after he won the NAC HIV and Cancer Drive tournament back in March while he finished third at the Universal Classic Championship last month.

Both tournaments were held at Royal Harare Golf Club.

The 32-year-old golfer had another good outing at the Tongaat Hulett Lowveld ProAM at Triangle and Hippo Valley Golf Club where he finished in fifth place on 4- under and was nine strokes behind winner David Amm.

Cameroonian Pristy Fon Nji was the runner-up in the four day Libreville Golf Open tournament after managing rounds of 70, 67, 70 and 70 to finish on 11 - under while Zambian Sydney Wemba was third on overall 5 - under.

Wemba carded 71, 67,72 and 73 in four rounds.

It was a good tournament for Zimbabweans as Ronsbon Chinhoi and Gweru-based golfer Liberty Gumisa finished in the top five.

Chinhoi, who took part in the FBC Zimbabwe Open two weeks ago, shot rounds of 75, 71, 67 and 71 to finish on 4 – under overall and fourth place in the tournament.

Gumisa, who struggled at the Zim Open, found his mojo at the Libreville Golf Open to finish the tournament on 3 - under after managing 71, 73, 74 and 67 to complete the top five.

A record number of 182 golfers, 62 professionals and 120 amateurs took part in the tournament.

A total of 13 different countries namely France, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon, DRC, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda and hosts Gabon were represented in the annual golf tournament.
