Kelvin Muchenje is on cloud nine after he claimed the coveted Champion of Champions Golf Tournament title, marking a significant breakthrough on the amateur circuit this year.
The tournament, held on June 28 and 29 at the Roland Park Golf Club in Zvishavane, saw Muchenje emerge victorious with an impressive overall score of 1-under par over three rounds.
He carded 69, 75 and 71.
Muchenje's stellar performance put him two strokes clear of Midlands Amateur champion Elton Zulu, who finished with an overall 1-over par.
Teenage sensation Darlington Chikanyambidze secured third place, ending the tournament five-over-par.
"I am grateful to win the tournament. It was tough competition but I managed to come out tops," a delighted Muchenje said after his win. "This is more special because it's my first win this year on the amateur circuit. I have been playing well but unfortunately I have been finishing second in most of the tournaments I competed in. I finished as runner-up four times and I was just one event where I would be able to cross the line. It's a nice feeling to be champion of all the champions in the country. I look forward to playing more tournaments and winning."
The victory is a testament to Muchenje's perseverance and growing confidence. "Confidence-wise I think I am in the right place with all those national team assignments and experiences; I feel like I can face any challenges," he stated. "However, winning has a way of spurring someone so I hope to kick on from here this season."
Muchenje also extended his gratitude to those who have supported his golfing journey. "I would like to thank my employer the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) for giving me the opportunity to play golf full-time. It has helped me improve so I am grateful to the Commissioner General for that. I am also grateful to my home, the ZRP Golf Club, for supporting me in every game that I play."
