The Zimbabwe Under-19 men cricket’s woes in the Super Six stage continued after they suffered a massive 146-run defeat to England in their final match of the group at Senwes Park Cricket Ground in Potchefstroom, South Africa yesterday.

Zimbabwe won the toss and captain, Matthew Schonken made an interesting choice, opting to bowl first on a batting friendly track.

Prosper Utseya’s charges did exceptionally well to restrict England to 237 for 7 in their 50 Overs but the target looked too steep for the team, which has struggled with the bat in the competition.

The team could only manage 91 runs for 24.5 overs in the chase to end the World Cup campaign with a huge defeat.

After the defeat Zimbabwe will now finish the competition in 12th place out of the 16 teams that participated.

Zimbabwe has only managed one win in the competition, against Namibia, which was enough to take them into the Super Six stage where they have lost both their matches.

Against England, the team made three changes to the squad that lost to hosts South Africa in the first Super Six tie.

Panashe Gwatiringa, Munashe Chimusoro and Kohl Eksteen came in for Nathaniel Hlabangana, Brendon Sunguro and Mashford Shungu.

Newman Nyamhuri took two wickets for 50 runs from 10 overs while Anesu Kamuriwo, Kohl Eksteen and Schonken picked one each as the bowlers were let down by poor fielding.

At least six catches were dropped during the England innings.

Charlie Allison (76) and Theo Wylie (61) scored half centuries for England with Haydon Mustard being run out nine runs short of a 50.

That was before Tazeem Chaudry Ali, the 17-year-old English spinner took centre stage, spinning the ball to perfection much to the chagrin of the Zimbabwe batsmen.

Ali claimed seven wickets for 29 runs from 7.5 overs.

He accounted for the wickets of Zimbabwe skipper, Schonken, Gwatiringa, Panashe Taruvinga, who top scored with 38 runs, Ryan Kwamwemba, Eksteen, Anesu Kamuriwo and Ryan Simbi.

Charlie Barnard and Denly cleaned the other three, taking two and one wicket respectively.
