Drug peddler weeps in court

Sibongile Phiri pleaded guilty to the charge before magistrate Joshua Nembaware, who sentenced her to 14 months in jail.

A 34 year-old female drug peddler wept uncontrollably at the Plumtree magistrates courts last week after she was convicted for unlawful possession of dangerous drugs.

Sibongile Phiri pleaded guilty to the charge before magistrate Joshua Nembaware, who sentenced her to 14 months in jail.

However, the magistrate conditionally suspended the sentence to 210 hours of community service at Mabuleyi Primary School.

Phiri begged for mercy in tears saying she uses the dagga to lower her sugar levels.

"Your worship l am kindly asking for forgiveness because l use dagga to lower my sugar levels because l am diabetic," she said in between tears

Prosecutor Selestine Madziwa told the court that on December 20  last year, police received a tip off to the effect that Phiri was selling drugs.

They went to investigate and uncovered 15 satchets of dagga at her tuck shop.

 The dagga weighed 30 grammes.
