MPs to be sworn in tomorrow

The ruling Zanu PF party has 136 members in the National Assembly, while its rival the Citizens Coalition for Change has 73.

ZIMBABWE’S incoming lawmakers will be sworn in tomorrow after the harmonised elections held about two weeks ago.

The ruling Zanu PF party has 136 members in the National Assembly, while its rival the Citizens Coalition for Change has 73.

In an Extraordinary Government Gazette published yesterday, Clerk of Parliament Kennedy Chokuda said the taking of oath by the new Members of Parliament would be in terms of the provisions of section 128(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe which prescribes the taking of an oath before becoming an MP.

“It is hereby notified that, in terms of section 128(1) of the Constitution, the day and time for Members of Parliament to make and subscribe to the Oath of a Member of Parliament before the Clerk of Parliament in the form set out in the Third Schedule to the Constitution shall be 10 o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 7th of September 2023, for members of the National Assembly; and 1430 o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 7th of September, 2023, for members of the Senate; at the Parliament Building, Harare,” Chokuda said.

The taking of oath by MPs will pave way for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to appoint a new Cabinet. The law states that all Cabinet members except five should be MPs.
