Nurses frog-marched to ideology school

HEALTH workers are reportedly being commandeered to attend Zanu PF’s indoctrination lessons conducted by the party’s Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology.

In a letter written in August, 2023 and addressed to chief directors, chief medical officers, provincial medical directors, directors and programme managers, Health and Child Care permanent secretary Jasper Chimedza, however, seemed to claim that some health workers had actually been pleading for the lessons.

“It is noted that some members of staff have requested to be trained in Ideology at Chitepo School of Ideology. In view of the above, you are requested to liaise with Chitepo School of Ideology regarding training logistics and update this office,” Chimedza said.

The Chitepo School of Ideology is a Zanu PF affiliate named after liberation hero, Herbert Chitepo.

Zanu PF has on numerous occasions made abundantly clear its ambitions to promote the ideology school.

Last year, there was furore after some Zanu PF officials suggested that all civil servants should pass through the ideology school.

Yesterday, medical practitioners gave mixed views about reports that they are supposed to attend the Zanu PF indoctrination lessons.

Medical practitioner Hamadziripi Dube said taking such critical workers as doctors and nurses to the school was a noble idea.

“It will prepare them to be patriotic, sovereign and dedicated to work for the country,” Dube said.

“The school of ideology is not for Zanu PF but for Zimbabwe as a country, even those who believe in opposition policies are then welcome to join the school.”

Community Working Group on Health executive director Itai Rusike, however, said there was no need to force workers to participate in partisan politics.
