Bring perpetrators of political violence to book, ERC says

The CCC activist, Tinashe Chitsunge, from Glen View was hit with a stone while trying to flee from a suspected Zanu PF mob which had gone on the rampage against opposition activists who had gathered at the ground to hold a rally.

The Election Resource Centre (ERC) has condemned the political  violence, which resulted in the death of a Citizen Coalition for Change (CCC) supporter in Harare on Thursday.

CCC activist Tinashe Chitsunge was stoned to death by a suspected Zanu PF supporter near Tanaka grounds in Glen View high density suburb.

In a statement on Friday, ERC called for an immediate end to election-related violence

"The right to life is sacrosanct and nobody has the right to take it away,”it said.

“Freedom of association and assembly are fundamental rights for anyone in Zimbabwe.

“The right to own private property is guaranteed in the Constitution and acts of arson as reported in Shurugwi must be condemned.

"With 18 days to the polls, as the Election Resource Centre, we urge a prompt and thorough investigation by the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, that will bring to justice the perpetrators of these acts of violence," the statement added.

CCC leader Nelson Chamisa also condemned politically motivated violence, saying people should not be sacrificed for political expediency.

Chamisa said police should do their work in bringing perpetrators to justice.

“I’m so saddened by the politically motivated cold blooded murder of a gallant Change Champion, Citizen Tinashe Chitsunge,” he said on X, which was previously known as Twitter.

“No life should be lost on account of politics.

“No party or politician is worthy killing for.

“ My heartfelt condolences to Tinashe Chitsunge's family and the Citizens family as a whole.”

On the same day, Chamisa’s convoy was  attacked by suspected Zanu PF activists in Mutasa, Manicaland province, after addressing the opposition leader had addressed a rally.
