NGUWANYANA community in Plumtree, Matabeleland South province, has partnered with the Pretoria Portland Cement Zimbabwe to build an Early Childhood Education (EDC) classroom block and a teachers' cottage at Dilankombe Primary School.

PPC donated 600 bags of cement towards the project.

Nguwanyana Development Trust had approached PPC asking them to develop the community and to improve facilities at schools, as well as the lives of children.

Nguwanyana village head Misheck Ncube said: "Our forebears tried to build a school but they did not succeed.  PPC has now come to our rescue and we are very grateful for everything they have done for us.  I cannot thank them enough.  This is a huge blessing to the community.”

Ward 14 councillor Sharleen Ncube expressed appreciation for the project, saying it would make a positive impact on the lives of children in the community.

Before the project, pupils as young as five years used to walk long distances to the nearest school.

“This school project will shorten the distance that children have to travel to school. We are now aiming to construct another classroom block and a cottage for the teachers,” the councillor said.

PPC managing director Kelibone Masiyane said support for quality education was one of the firm’s core values.

“PPC is heavily involved in developing better quality education facilities across the country in order to give children opportunities for a better future,” Masiyane said.
