Warriors suffer Musona blow

The Warriors 2015 Afcon campaign has suffered a major blow before it has even started with striker Knowledge Musona out for at least a month depending on the extent of his ligament injury.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter revealed on Wednesday night that they had discovered the player had suffered knee ligament damage which has ruled him out for the rest of the season.

The draw for the qualifiers set to start next month will be held on Sunday with the first set of matches scheduled for the weekend of May 16-18.

While Baxter did not reveal the full extent of the injury local experts told IndependentSport that it was highly unlikely Musona would feature in that match.

The worst case scenario would see Musona sidelined for three months; at best he could be out for four weeks.

The news comes on the back of a difficult few weeks for the striker who picked up the knock during Kaizer Chiefs’ 2-0 win over AS Vita in the CAF Champions League, though he was only expected to be out for one or two games.

After missing a handful of fixtures and playing just a few minutes against Polokwane City recently, a baffled Baxter said they had no idea what was wrong with Musona because scans suggested there was nothing wrong with the forward.

However, after multiple scans on the ankle, the Amakhosi doctors finally came across the problem and realised that it was far worse than they had originally thought.

Speaking to the media after the game, Baxter explained the extent of injury saying: “He had a very complicated injury. The bone is surrounded by a membrane, and the ligament is attached to that.

That was detaching from the actual bone, but when we did the scans and there was no movement, it was lying in the right place, so it was impossible to see.”

“It looked like there was no ligament damage, but as we started to move him around we realised that the membrane was moving away from the bone and therefore the ligament was becoming slack and not holding his foot in place. It was only when we started moving him around that we found the bleeding. So Knowledge is out for the season.”

Musona is likely to return to Germany after his yearlong loan stint with Chiefs.
