Editors welcome re-engagement

WHILE re-engagement by the new government has been welcomed private media editors yesterday said the media should remain vigilant because of the past when journalists were harassed and arrested, with newspapers being closed.

Staff Writer.

Zimbabwe Independent editor Dumisani Muleya said the return of Jonathan Moyo as Information minister was good for the media fraternity, particularly his re-engagement approach.“Moyo’s return is a progressive and useful appointment after the elections and this has been enhanced by his re-engagement because that is what the media has been looking for,” Muleya said at a Zimbabwe-chapter of Media Institute of Sothern Africa meeting.

Moyo has been on a whirlwind tour of media houses since his re-appointment, in a contrast to his abrasive approach between 2000 and 2004.“We must remain vigilant, alert and sceptical of the government because of our past experiences despite these new overtures by the Information minister,” Muleya said.
