Youth Forum ditches Crisis Coalition

THE Youth Forum has withdrawn its membership from the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition with immediate effect, accusing the organisation of being run like the “mafia”, as squabbling in civil society deepens.
In a letter written on Wednesday, Youth Forum chairperson Madock Chivasa said the coalition was no longer living up to the organisation’s expectations as it was suppressing views and shrinking democratic space.
“This decision (to withdraw) was made after much thought and consideration following the hijacking of Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition and turning it into a mafia-style organisation run by and for the benefit of a few egocentric and autocratic individuals,” reads the letter.
“We also note a well-orchestrated attempt by the coalition management to malign the Youth Forum following youth committee resolutions which unanimously passed a vote of no confidence in the office of chairperson, Mr Okay Machisa, and called for the suspension of the Global Advocacy Campaign (GAC) until there is total buy-in from (youth) membership.”
Serious infighting has rocked Crisis over the GAC project supporting the MDC-T to ensure a free and fair election. The youth membership is said to be resisting the GAC alleging that Machisa and the organisation’s director, McDonald Lewanika, want to impose it on them.
