Council’s service delivery deplorable

THE Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) is conducting the residents’ march on Monday September 28 2009 from the Africa Unity Square (opposite the Nelson Mandela entrance to Parliament) to the Town House.

It is starting at 12 midday. The March is a protest against the following critical issues:

  • Exorbitant Rates and other levies being charged by the city council;
  • The fact that we have been paying the rates but there is no proportional improvement of service delivery in Harare;
  • Poor prioritisation of issues as manifested in the recent purchase of three executive cars at a cost of over US$300 000 yet service delivery remains very poor and non existent in some areas and;
  • The unwarranted interference in the council business by the Local government minister,

The minister has rescinded several council resolutions meant to expose and stamp out corruption by previous councils and commissions.
It is our responsibility and duty to hold our leaders accountable or else we will continue to suffer. The residents are also taking this opportunity to reaffirm their demand for local government reforms that will enhance civic participation in decision-making processes.
