THE recent endorsement of Zanu PF leader Robert Mugabe as the “Supreme Leader†whose post cannot be contested in the upcoming December party congress by the Harare Provincial Youth League is quite disturbing.
What “unparalleled leadership qualities†are in Mugabe that they “deserve to be preserved for the good of the nation This unquestioning loyalty and support does the party and nation no good.
Our tragedy lies in the fact that we have allowed Mugabe to dominate and determine the fate of our country to the extent that some think that there could be no Zimbabwe without him.
As the late Professor Masipula Sithole puts it: “In this we are all guilty, particularly those who have surrounded him singing praises and getting angry on his behalf for all these yearsâ€.
The fate of our country depends on all of us and we all have a responsibility to save our country from the crisis it is now in.
I believe that Zanu PF was founded on the principle that “leaders will come and go but Zimbabwe will exist foreverâ€. There is need for us to get angry on behalf of our country as opposed to leaders who lead us into disaster. It is apparent that Mugabe has nothing more to offer that he has not had a chance to do for the past 29 years.
