Mugeyi Faces Ajax Exit

WILFRED Mugeyi could be on his way out of Ajax Cape Town after the South African premiership side this week sacked head coach Craig Rosslee.

Former Zimbabwe striker Mugeyi, Rosslee’s assistant, could be shown the exit door in a major reshuffle of the Cape side’s coaching staff.

Turkish-born Muhsin Ertugral, who left Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs last week after failing to land the Absa Premiership, is tipped to take over at Ajax for another term.

If Ertugral agrees to return to the Urban Warriors, the team he coached before joining Chiefs, former Bafana Bafana striker Shaun Bartlett is likely to be his assistant with former Bafana goalkeeper Hans Vonk coming in as goalkeeper coach.

“There is a possibility that Muhsin wants me as an assistant,” former Charlton Athletics hitman Bartlett told The Star. “But I haven’t met anyone, nor have I spoken to Ajax. I don’t know why that has been reported.”

Mugeyi’s future will also depend on the new coach’s choice of assistants.

“We haven’t made a decision on our current assistant coaches yet,” said club chief executive George Comitis. “The new coach will soon come in and make the decision and maybe our current assistants will stay.”

Mugeyi is highly regarded at the club he shone as a player. He was in charge of the club’s juniors before being promoted to senior team assistant coach.

The decision to part ways with Rosslee seems to stem from Ajax’s failure to compete favourably with other top SA premiership sides and elimination from the African Champions League at the hands of Zimbabwean champions Monomotapa. — Staff Writer.
