TENNIS Zimbabwe director of development and junior team coach, Claudio Murape, said Zimbabwe and other southern African teams put up an excellent performance at the just ended African Junior championships in Morocco.

“The likes of Morocco and Egypt normally dominate these games,” Murape said.  “This is because they are more accustomed to the clay surface. They were however shocked in this particular tournament as  teams from Southern Africa, including South Africa and Zimbabwe, put up an excellent performance.”

South Africa came first overall.  Zimbabwe were fifth after South Africa, Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia.

Zimbabwe took part in two tournaments: the African Junior Championships and the International Junior Championships of Morocco. Murape said he believes the team has great potential.

“The team performed well and I believe they can do better in tournaments to come as many players made it to the semi-finals and finals. Notable performances were from Valeria Bhunu, who came first in the girls’ under-16 International Junior Championships of Morocco.”

Bhunu is  part of the team that will represent Africa in the European Junior Tennis Championships. — Own Staff.
