Econet aims for top spot

ECONET Wireless Holdings says it will push to boost its subscriber base to over a million subscribers this year, consolidating its position as one of the largest telecommunications companies in the region outside South Africa.

e company announced last week that it was injecting US$20 million from an African Import-Export Bank loan to boost the subscriber base from 500 000 to 800 000.

“Econet founder Strive Masiyiwa said at the end of last year that management in Zimbabwe had been directed to grow the subscriber base to reach one million,” said group spokesman Sure Kamhunga.

He said Econet management was “looking at ways to raise more foreign exchange”.

Kamhunga said civil works and other local currency-denominated infrastructure on new sites had been developed and were ready for additional imported installations.

“Already the company has put up more than 100 towers around the country which are just waiting for the imported equipment,” he said. — Staff Writer.
