Sports Club, OH face off

By Brain Murandu

THIRD-PLACED Harare Sports Club clash with reigning champions Old Hararians tomorrow in an interesting derby of this weekend’s Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) premier league action.

Sports Club host OH, who lie second with 29 points.

Sports Club are in third position with same number of points.

OH, affectionately known as the “Green Machine”, are however a pale shadow of last year’s side that grabbed the crown for the second time in a row.

Sports Club have the advantage of a game in hand over OH, who have played seven games and are left with two ties to complete their league programme.

OH boast veterans Rockface Gurumani, ex-Busters’ player Emmanuel Munyoro and the sure-footed Farai Shava to scare the hosts.

Fullback Sean de Souza makes an emotional appearance for Sports Club against the side he recently dumped.

The battle for the top four slots to feature in play-offs has intensified and seventh-placed Western Panthers of Bulawayo have to forget their fruitless visits to the capital over the last two weeks when they face the wounded tigers, fourth-placed University, in a game at Hartsfield.

Shabanie Mine host fading giants Old Miltonians of Bulawayo, while log-leaders Mashonaland Country District visit Hartsfield to face Busters.

Gweru Sports Club, who host Mabvuku, are on the brink of making history by ending the season without a point.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe national schools rugby squad is set to leave today for South Africa’s Nelspruit where they compete in the annual Coca-Cola Craven Week festival hoping to do better than last year.

Zimbabwe, coached by Falcon College headmaster Reg Querl, is venturing into the unknown as nothing is guaranteed in this competition.

In last year’s event, Zimbabwe lost 5-8 to South African side Griffins before losing again to Namibia 12-17.

Tomorrow’s ZRU premier league fixtures:

Harare Sports Club vs Old Hararains – Harare Sports Club; Shabanie vs Old Miltonians – MacAdam (Zvishavane); Western Panthers vs University – Hartsfield (Bulawayo); Gweru vs Mabvuku – Gweru Sports Club; and Busters vs MCD – Hartsfield (Bulawayo).
