KARIBA town will get its first ever professional boxing tournament when top boxers from Harare battle it out in the Zambezi Valley hotel 26th
> anniversary celebrations tomorrow with five boxing stables having sent in their boxers.

It promises to be exciting as it will be the first time for Kariba town to host a professional boxing tournament.

Bartholomew Dendere, the secretary-general of Golden Glovez boxing promotion, said it was important for boxing to gain its past popularity.

“We want boxing to be popular,” he said. “We want fans to fill up the stadium like they used to do when Kilimanjaro was fighting.”

The first bout will be a 12-round title fight in the cruiserweight category. Ageless Arigoma Chiponda of Bitcon Black Fist promotions will face Chamunorwa “Sting” Gonorenda of Hard Rock Promotions.

Chiponda came in as a replacement for Gibson Mapfumo who withdrew from the fight after his child fell ill. Chiponda, who is a former light heavyweight champion, could become the new cruiserweight champion should he win the fight.

Welterweight champion Takudzwa “Terminator” Kuchocha of the Golden Glovez stable will face Livingstone “Tornado” Master of Mau-Mau boxing promotions. The 12-round bout will be a non-title fight.

A light welterweight bout is also on the cards when champion Isaac Phonkeni of Golden Glovez clashes with Elson Muhambi in an eight-round non-title contest. Muhambi is from Mau Mau boxing promotions.

The last fight for male boxers will pit Ali Otto Phiri of Hard Rock promotions against Linos Murabwa of Mau Mau in a lightweight non-title fight.

A female featherweight bout will be among the much-awaited fights for the night. Patience Master of Bitcon Black Fist Promotions will face Pamela Camphili of Golden Glovez.

It will be the first professional boxing title fight for the ladies in Zimbabwe.
