Shabanie goalie favourite for top award

By Brain Murandu

SHABANIE Mine shot-stopper Andrew Chisunga is tipped to land the Food Chain Goalkeeper of the Month Award after conceding only one goal in the first four weeks of the 2004 Premier Soccer Lea

gue season. The award ceremony is scheduled for this weekend.

Chisunga, aided by a tough-as-teak defence of arguably the country’s best leftback Stephen Matsaire, towering Shadreck Malunga, Misheck Makota and find-of-the-season Method Mwanjali, has contributed immensely to Shabanie Mine’s impressive start.

The asbestos miners lead the log with a 100% record after five matches.

Chisunga conceded one goal at home from a strike by AmaZulu prolific goalgetter and captain, Norman “Father” Komani, in Shabanie’s 4-1 demolition of the defending champions at Zvishavane’s Maglas Stadium three weeks ago.

He went on to produce a clean sheet in the 2-0 away victory over PSL debutantes Kwekwe Cables at Mbizo Stadium a fortnight ago and last weekend’s win over Wankie by an identical scoreline at Maglas.

Chisunga began to show that he is in no mean mood as early as the first game against Railstars at Bulawayo’s Luveve Stadium where he kept at bay strikes from the railwaymen’s wonderboy Njabulo “Afro” Ncube.

Ncube and Shabanie Mine’s hardrunning Warriors’ striker Albert “Aaliyah” Mbano and Chisunga are also running for the New Windermere hotel southern region Sports Writers Association of Zimbabwe (SWAZ) player of the month award also to be announced soon in Bulawayo.

SWAZ’s national body is has been consulted on the selection of the Food Chain Goalkeeper of the Month whose prize include $250 000 in cash plus accessories worth $100 000.

The other goalkeeper who could upstage Chisunga is Caps United goalminder Witness Munkuli who grabbed the jersey following the departure of Warriors’ first choice Energy Murambadoro who is now at South Africa’s Hellenics.

Charles Mabika, a co-ordinator of the monthly best goalkeepers’ award confirmed the winner would be announced at the end of the week.

The monthly awards will culminate in the best goalkeeper of the season whose prize money is $1m with accessories worth $250 000.
