INTERNATIONAL hotel group Cresta Hospitality (Cresta) has opened the US$7,5 million Cresta Royale Accra, its first hotel under manage-ment contract in West Africa.

The four-star hotel was opened on November 7 and a Zimbabwean and former Cresta Jameson general manager, Sajid Khan, is already spearheading operations there.

The Cresta Royale Accra hotel will upon completion consist of 100 guest rooms and fully equipped conference facilities and business services.

Cresta marketing and sales manager Norman Ndoro said the hotel was expected to ease the shortage of high quality hotel accommodation in Accra and also create permanent employment for at least 100 individuals.

He said this was a strategic move meant not only to strengthen the position of Cresta in West Africa but for the convenience of many of the group’s corporate travelers.

Trust Banking Corporation Ltd has also moved into Ghana and Moyo said much synergy had already between created between the two groups.

Currently operating 13 hotels in Zimbabwe and Botswana, the Cresta group will be opening in Malawi by February next year.

The deal is also under management contract.

This 50-roomed US$4 million hotel, named Cresta Crossroads, will be situated in Lilongwe as a result of it being located at the intersection of two main roads.

“The Cresta Royale rooms become the largest rooms in Accra boasting of 30 square metres of well-equipped modern rooms with ensuite Italian finished bathrooms, in-room entertainment features, various businessperson focused television and radio channels and separate high speed internet connectivity from each room, at the special business work desk designed with the business traveller in mind,” Moyo said.

He said both hotels would be run on management contracts.

Moyo said the West African region was a huge market that needed to be explored.

The marketing manager said moving into that region provided Cresta with a stepping-stone into the Economic Community for West African States (Ecowas).

He said Malawi was also a growing market that was now being frequented by corporate clients because of its vast tourism sites and unexplored opportunities.

Cresta is one of the region’s largest hotel groups operating in four countries, Botswana, Ghana, Malawi, and Zimbabwe.

The group currently manages and operates 14 properties regionally under three distinct brands – the five-star Cresta resort brand, the three to four-star hotel brand offering accommodation and conference and banqueting facilities in the central business district and primarily aimed at the business traveller and conference attendee and, the three to four-star selected services Cresta Lodge brand offering value for money accommodation, conferencing and banqueting facilities for the businessman.

Moyo said building on its success in southern Africa, the group’s business strategy was to increase the number of hotels, resorts and lodges under management throughout Africa.
