THIS letter is directed to the well-meaning contributor of the letter titled “Misleading comparison” in the Zimbabwe Independent issue of August 8. OF course I feel the same way. My letter was no
t a callous comparison but a cynical one to highlight just how horrible conditions are.
My whole point is that in a hyperinflationary environment $1000 loaves of bread completely confound understanding. People are trading for goods in millions of dollars yet in real terms their wealth has been decimated.
Sometimes it’s only by highlighting the grotesque that you can get an idea of what the reality is. I invite you to re-read my letter in that light.
