I WAS fascinated by the story entitled “Church raises $30m for Mugabe” (Zimbabwe Independent, January 9).
However, what fascinated me more is the fact that at the
Zanu PF Congress in Masvingo President Mugabe acknowledged receiving $75m from Nicholas Vingirai, a prominent businessman with diverse interests in the financial services sector.
That did not make news at all. All business newspapers in the country ignored that. Am I missing something here? Why should a donation of $30m make news whilst that of $75m doesn’t? Why should a donation by the Church to Mugabe make news in a business newspaper whilst a donation by a prominent businessman to Mugabe does not make news in the same business newspaper? It beats me. Are there sacred cows here?
