THERE was a period, possibly pre-Independence, when the government built pre-fabricated structures at schools, technical colleges, police stations, prisons, army barracks and so on.
Later the “Durawall” version of these structures appeared. Look at the Passport Office at Makombe Building. Often at police stations and prisons one sees the log cabin version, possibly more recent and least durable.
One wonders what the official position on these structures is at the moment or is it the government’s intention to destroy all these structures including its own? Will the government pay the $23 million per structure to the city council for transgressing the law?
