Hwange Golf Club won the 2025 Macaskill Trophy in style with home advantage to the runners up Bulawayo Golf Club. They have solidified their reputation as a strong force, with most wins followed by BGC and Harry Allen Golf Club.

Macaskill is a league that is played by 5 clubs under the ambit of Matabeleland Golf Association, and it is named after Ian Macaskill a former champion golfer at BGC between 1949 and 1951. The teams are Harry Alen Golf Club, Elephant Hills Golf Club, Bulawayo Golf Club, Hwange Golf Club, and Bulawayo Golf Club.

This league competition was started way back around 1990. There was a break in 2009 to 2013, then 2019 to 2024.

The Matebeleland Golf Association revived it in 2025 under the leadership of V Sinyoka and the format of play for this competition is Matchplay, played on a home and away basis. The teams then win on points and holes.

The teams are grouped into zones – Matabeleland North and Bulawayo Metropolitan, with winners in the two provinces battling it out in the final playoffs.

“We are likely to continue with this arrangement as manage issue of travel between Bulawayo, Hwange and Victoria Falls. In future we would like to see each Club playing against all the Clubs in the province for points, and then we have a final match between Clubs with the highest points” Mr Sinyoka added.

Such tournaments promotes the furtherance of golf as clubs have increased games and competitions, and  players get an opportunity  to play with a varied mix of golfers, therefore promoting inclusivity. Golfers also play in different environments, and are exposed to competitive golf.

Juniors and Amateurs also participated in the tournament as Edward Jnr Museke and Malvin Chiriminga represented their clubs in the finals.

Edward, a talented young golfer has made a name for himself as he has won Mzilikazi tournament and the 2025 ZUSA gold medal. With his sights set on representing Zimbabwe, this win for him shows that he is a team player.
