IN a compelling display of world-class polo, South Africa’s national team mounted a formidable comeback, but ultimately fell short by a single goal against Argentina in an international test match on Saturday April 19, 2025.
The prestigious event, hosted at the newly established Tafika polo fields in Plettenberg Bay South Africa concluded with a final score of 6-5 in favour of the visitors. The match was sponsored by Zimbabwe-based Titan Law. It was a spectacular contest featuring exceptional horsemanship of premier international calibre from both teams, remarked expert commentator Matt Pohl.
Historic return to Plettenberg Bay
The match represents a significant milestone for the region, marking the first polo test match played in Plettenberg Bay in over a decade.
Competitive exchange
The contest remained intensely competitive throughout, with Argentina gradually building a 4-2 advantage. South Africa narrowed the gap to 4-3 midway through the fourth chukka, demonstrating their resilience.
The fifth and final chukka saw Argentina, led by captain Paco Odwyer’s inspired play, extend their lead to 6-3, appearing poised for a decisive victory. However, South Africa mounted a remarkable resurgence in the final three-and-a-half minutes.
South Africa’s Dirk van Reenen reduced the deficit to 6-4, followed by captain Tom de Bruin’s goal, bringing the score to 6-5. Despite this valiant effort, South Africa’s comeback proved insufficient as time ran out. Argentina maintained their historical dominance over South Africa in an impressive display of technical skill, securing a hard-fought victory.
