Pasuwa tipped to take over Flames of Malawi

Kalisto Pasuwa

FORMER Warriors and Dynamos coach Kalisto Pasuwa has been tipped to take over as interim head coach of the Malawi national team.

According to media reports in that country, the Football Association of Malawi (Fam)’s technical committee has recommended Pasuwa for the job.

Pasuwa is the current head coach for trailblazing champions, Nyasa Bullets.

The technical sub-committee sees the former Dynamos gaffer as the perfect fit to take charge of the Flames in the remaining 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Guinea and Ethiopia after Fam recently got rid of Romanian coach Mario Marinica.

Marinica has been placed on leave for the remainder of his one-year contract, as they seek a replacement.

“It was recommended that the post should be advertised, but in the interim, a caretaker panel was recommended. However, I cannot reveal the names as this is just a recommendation  to the Fam executive committee,” the committee’s acting chairperson Suzgo Ngwira-Simbi was quoted saying.

The Nation newspaper quoted sources saying football authorities were ready to settle for Pasuwa.

The former Warriors tactician has shone in the Malawian Premier League with four back-to-back titles under his belt.

A source quoted by The Nation said: “A couple of names were thrown into the fray, but in the end it was resolved that Pasuwa should be recommended to the Fam executive committee. On its part, the National Football Coaches Association proposed Ngwira as interim head coach with (Blue Eagles) Elia Kananji as his assistant, but after a lengthy debate, it was felt that Pasuwa would be ideal. The trio of Yasin Osman, Kelvin M’mangisa and Fam technical director Benjanin Kumwenda will likely be appointed as Pasuwa's advisory committee.”

Meanwhile, Fam president Walter Nyamilandu said he has since given the nod on the national team changes.

“We will seek guidance from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Malawi National Council of Sports and also consider views of the technical sub-committee to enable us make an informed decision on the way forward,” he said.
