Farmer in court for maintenance

News

Prominent farmer Jeremy Phiri has been dragged to court by his estranged wife who is demanding US$3 200 for the upkeep of their minor child.

His lawyer told Harare magistrate Ayanda Dlamini that his client was facing financial difficulties and could afford to give his wife Mitchell Gwatidzo US$200.

“We are requesting to have the child transferred to a local government school as the respondent did with his other minor children because he can no longer afford fees at private schools,” he submitted.

The court also heard that Phiri had two wives.

“The respondent had to relocate to live at his farm with his two other wives after he faced eviction from his previous rented house.” Gwatidzo through her lawyer Bridget Mahuni said Phiri was a man of means and earning over US$10 000 a month from his farming ventures.

Dlamini postponed her ruling to tomorrow.
