Job Sikhala found guilty, again

Sikhala, who was being represented by Jeremiah Bamu and Harrison Nkomo, was remanded to Monday for mitigation, aggravation and sentencing.

OPPOSITION activist and former Zengeza West legislator Job Sikhala was yesterday convicted by Harare magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka for publishing falsehoods on his Facebook platform.

Sikhala, who was being represented by Jeremiah Bamu and Harrison Nkomo, was remanded to Monday for mitigation, aggravation and sentencing.

He was arrested for publishing on his Facebook page that a police officer had killed a child with a baton after a video went viral of a crying woman grabbing a policeman by the collar saying he had killed her baby.

Another opposition activist and former Mt Pleasant legislator Fadzayi Mahere was convicted on the same charge last year.

She was fined US$500 for the offence.

Chakanyuka said the State proved beyond doubt that Facebook page where the video was posted was Sikhala’s.

“lt is clear that the accused person is the one who published those statements on his platform. The child did not die, the child was not assaulted by the baton and the child is still alive,” Chakanyuka said.
