Man offers US$10 maintenance

“I can only pay US$10 as maintenance, not the US$130 she is claiming because I am not employed. I only make around US$70 per month.”

A HARARE man yesterday denied having multiple sources of income in a bid to justify his US$10 offer for the upkeep of his eight-month-old child.

Denis Madzokere told Harare magistrate Ayanda Dlamini that he was unemployed and could not afford what his ex-lover, Nicki Chidzura, was demanding.

Denying claims by Chidzura that he was a shop owner and had a fleet of taxis, he submitted: “I do not own any house or shop to rent out as she is claiming. I do not even have any experience in driving, but she is claiming that I own pirate taxis.

“I can only pay US$10 as maintenance, not the US$130 she is claiming because I am not employed. I only make around US$70 per month.”

He also told the court that he had four other children, an expecting wife and needed to take care of his elderly parents.

Chidziva, however, rejected the US$10 offer saying: “He is lying that he has four children. I lived with him for a few years and we would survive on money he received from the shop and his tenants.”

Dlamini ordered him to pay US$50.
