Hurungwe MP appeals for food aid

He made the appeal in a letter dated November 27, 2023 addressed to Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare minister July Moyo requesting over 300  tonnes of maize monthly to avert hunger-related deaths.

Hurungwe North Member of Parliament (MP), Pax Muringazuva, has appealed for emergency food aid to feed hungry communities in his constituency.

He made the appeal in a letter dated November 27, 2023 addressed to Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare minister July Moyo requesting over 300  tonnes of maize monthly to avert hunger-related deaths.

‘‘Due to the erratic rainfall season, Hurungwe North is in need of emergency food aid. A survey conducted by local leadership revealed that most households have run out of grain, as staple food,” part of the letter read.

He indicated that wards 1 and 4 required 20 tonnes each, wards 7 and 8 about 75 tonnes each, while ward 9 required 100 tonnes.

“The above quantities are sufficient during a normal rainy season. However, due to erratic rainfall this season, we request double allocation given that the normally food secure groups have been affected. This will bring our monthly allocation to 800 tonnes,’’ wrote Muringazuva.

Hurungwe district has five constituencies that fall under Zanu PF.

It is one of the prime producers of maize and tobacco in Mashonaland West province.

Of late, communal farmers, who were battling the effects of climate change, have shifted from maize farming due to mainly poor prices and delayed payments by the Grain Marketing Board.

Ironically, Hurungwe has the three grain silos — the highest number — at Mukwichi under Chief Kazangarare, Magunje under Chief Dendera and Karoi town.
