A lone gunman who caused panic in Beitbridge after he was seen on the banks of the Limpopo River on Wednesday was a Parks and Wildlife officer dealing with a case of human-wildlife conflict, police have said.
"That was a Parks and Wildlife officer deployed to scare menacing baboons terrorising residents of Limpopo View, " said Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo in charge of Beitbridge Police District.
Residents were concerned about him being in civilian clothes due to a spate of robberies in which firearms have been used.
And in another incident, a Zimbabwe National Army officer was dispossessed of a firearm while another officer from the President's Department had an AK 47 gun stolen from his house.
Residents are also worried about people living under the bridges at Beitbridge.
Baboons have become a menace in the border town where they are entering houses in search of food. Women and children are at risk of attacks from the cheeky animals.
Large troops of the baboons are also raiding trucks inside the Customs areas of both Zimbabwe and South Africa.
"The conflict of humans and baboons in Beitbridge is disturbing and they enter people's homes in search of food. A family once trapped one in a toilet and it destroyed all fittings in attempts to flee. This has become dangerous," said a policeman, who said even the ZRP housing camp had not been spared from raids.
