Retired lawyer jailed 18 months

RETIRED lawyer Phineas Ngarava, who was being accused of theft of trust property after he converted to his own use US$13 520 of proceeds of the sale of a house belonging to a client, has been sentenced to 18 months.

Ngarava, who was convicted by Harare magistrate Nyasha Vhitorini, will serve an effective 10-month jail term after the magistrate suspended eight months on condition of good behaviour.

The court heard that on a date unknown to the prosecution, but in December 2016 at Fidelity Life Towers, Ngarava acted in violation of a trust agreement with Humundivenga Matsveru, which required him to hold proceeds of the sale of Stand 258 Engineering, Highfield, Harare, amounting to US$13 521,50.
