Egypt to host Afreximbank’s 33rd annual meetings

Held under the theme “Intra-African Trade and Industrialisation: Pathway to Economic Sovereignty”, the gathering comes at a time of shifting geopolitical alliances and rising global uncertainty.

AFRICAN Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) will hold its 33rd Annual Meetings (AAM2026) in El Alamein, Egypt, from 21 to 24 June 2026, as the continent sharpens its focus on trade integration and industrial growth.

Held under the theme “Intra-African Trade and Industrialisation: Pathway to Economic Sovereignty”, the gathering comes at a time of shifting geopolitical alliances and rising global uncertainty.

It will place renewed emphasis on the need for African economies to deepen regional value chains, harness domestic capacity and accelerate industrial transformation to support sustainable growth.

The meetings are expected to draw Heads of State, senior government officials, policymakers, private sector leaders, financial institutions, academics and international partners from across Africa and beyond.

Through a series of high-level dialogues, Afreximbank aims to identify priority projects and practical programmes to reshape Africa’s trade structure, particularly as protectionism and economic self-interest continue to redefine global commerce.

Commenting on the upcoming meetings, Afreximbank president and board chairman George Elombi thanked the Egyptian government for hosting the event.

“For the past decade, Afreximbank has laid a solid foundation for intra-African trade to take off. As we enter this new phase, we must prioritise the processing of goods to be traded under the Free Trade Agreement,” he said.

“With the current global turmoil, marked by policy uncertainty and intensifying geopolitical tensions, Africans must look inwards for solutions relevant to their challenges. We must wean ourselves off trade in commodities, expand investment in processing, build regional value chains, and consume our products to realise the growth and shared prosperity we want.”

Hassan Abdalla, governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, said Egypt was honoured to host the meetings.

“At a time of increasing global uncertainty and shifting economic dynamics, Egypt’s strategic location and economic scale position it as a key driver of regional integration and advancing continental priorities,” he said.

“Hosting the AAM2026 in El Alamein reflects Egypt’s continued commitment to supporting African institutions, strengthening intra-African trade and advancing the continent’s industrialisation and long-term economic transformation.”

The AAM2026 will provide a platform for delegates to engage with decision-makers, build partnerships, explore trade finance and logistics opportunities, and unlock capital for investment deals. It is also expected to help structure bankable projects across the continent.

By bringing together a diverse range of stakeholders, the meetings aim to advance a shared vision of a more integrated, industrialised and economically sovereign Africa.
