Jane Salimo: Visionary on and off the fairways

Jane Salimo’s journey into golf began in 2009 when a friend invited her to participate in a tournament — an invitation that ignited a lifelong passion. From that moment, she wasted no time establishing herself as a formidable competitor, consistently finishing on the podium in numerous club, corporate and society tournaments.

Her sustained excellence earned her national recognition, culminating in selection to represent Zimbabwe in the National Team B Division and the A & B Triangular in 2023.

Among her notable accolades are the 2024 Harare Province Ladies Golf Association Victoria Trophy title and competition in the Mashonaland East and West A Division.

Beyond her achievements as a player, Jane has distinguished herself as a committed golf administrator and junior development advocate.

She has served as Chairperson of Junior Golf Development at Falcon Golf Club, Junior Girls’ Representative at Chapman Golf Club and is the Founder of the Hatfield Junior Golf Academy (HJGA).

Recognising the structural barriers facing young golfers — particularly those from underserved communities — Jane established HJGA in 2022 to provide access to training, mentorship and equipment for juniors who would otherwise be unable to compete in premier tournaments or afford golf clubs.

The academy draws young talent from communities, including Manyame, Epworth, Chitungwiza, Southlea Park, Ruwa, Avondale and Hatfield.

Since its formal launch in 2023, HJGA has registered 24 juniors, with between 9 and 13 attending structured practice sessions every Saturday.

The academy’s impact is already measurable. Three of its juniors are now competing in Harare Province league matches, a significant milestone for grassroots development.

Progress is continuously evaluated through in-house competitions and participation in association tournaments.

To broaden their exposure and inspire professional aspirations, HJGA juniors have also served as marshals at the Zimbabwe Open, offering them firsthand experience of elite-level competition.

Through competitive excellence, administrative leadership, and grassroots empowerment, Jane Salimo continues to leave an indelible mark on Zimbabwean golf — shaping not only champions, but the future of the sport itself.
