Film maker storms onto international scene

Admire Kudita

KUDZAI Chikomo, a self-effacing and multi-talented creative, has just snagged a nomination at this year’s Los Angeles Film Festival for best direction.

The stunning feat places Kudzai Chikomo, a film producer based in Bulawayo and head of the Multimedia Box creative outfit, alongside other Zimbabwean film industry professionals with global reach such Danai Gurira, Thandie Newton and Tongayi Arnold Chirisa.

The nomination in the best director category is for the Last Salute, a short film about a military general suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder who must overcome his illness to “prevent being lobotomised” after the Second World War, according to the IMDB website.

The film is directed by Chikomo and was written by Marc Anthony Greenland and features Marc Anthony Greenland as the lead actor.

The film was shot in Bulawayo in 2018.

Chikomo is also a content producer for Zambezi magic and has been winning commissions from the Multichoice-owned entity with consummate professionalism backed by a vibrant team of creatives such as scriptwriter Midlands State University media studies graduate Nkosilesisa Ncube, Johane Mpofu as director of photography and Robson Murambiwa as production manager at the core.

“I am honoured to be recognised by an esteemed international platform and this is good for the Zimbabwean film sector as a whole. I hope we win the award,” said Chikomo, a Chinhoyi University alumnus.

He has also served as a board member of the Bulawayo Polytechnic’s school of creative art and design aside from lending his creative genius to the fields of publishing and design for various institutions such as Amagugu International Heritage and TRACE.
