ZANU PF Masvingo province last week stepped up its calls to have the provincial executive dissolved amid allegations of electoral fraud and blatant violation of voting guidelines as directed by the politburo.
Sources in Masvingo said the provincial leadership failed to follow election guidelines which led to the election of an illegitimate executive.
“Provincial chairperson Callisto Gwanetsa ignored the guidelines so that he could handpick those aligned to his faction (belong to Vice-President Joice Mujuru) at the expense of elected members whose names were in the basket,” said a senior Zanu PF official from the province.
“The politburo directed the chairperson to correct the anomalies and remove all those who were not in the basket, such as Edison Zvobgo junior, and a few others for transparency’ sake,” the official said.
However, Zanu PF spokesperson Rugare Gumbo said Zvobgo has since been booted out.
Following the chaotic provincial elections late last year, Zanu PF has been embroiled in internal squabbles as members are locked in factional fights in the battle to succeed ageing party leader president Robert Mugabe who turned 90 last month.
The provincial executives are crucial as the structures will play a pivotal role in choosing members of the presidium at an elective congress in December.
Mujuru’s faction and Justice minister Emmerson Mnangagwa’s rival camp are fighting largely behind the scenes to control provincial structures.
“After our March 8 meeting which was attended by national commissar Webster Shamu, we wrote a letter to politburo expressing our disgruntlement and we expect Shamu to come back to us with a solution,” said another senior Zanu PF official from the province.
According to the official, the letter that was addressed to party national chairperson Simon Khaya Moyo claimed: “The meeting noted that the chairman (Gwanetsa) misdirected, manipulated and did not follow party directives on the holding and conduct of provincial elections.”
Zanu PF’s Midlands provincial infighting was also taken to the politburo where it was resolved Shamu should go and investigate the whole saga in an effort to restore order.
