THE two MDC formations led by Morgan Tsvangirai and Welshman Ncube are lobbying the African Union to push for the postponement of harmonised elections set for July 31, President Robert Mugabe revealed today.
Addressing thousands of Zanu PF supporters in Marondera, Mugabe said such moves will not stop Zimbabwe from holding elections in two weeks.
“The MDCs have reported the issue to the AU and we are sending Justice minister Patrick Chinamasa to the AU on 19 July but that will not stop us from having elections” Mugabe said.
In an interview with Zimbabwe Independent, presidential spokesperson George Charamba said the MDCs’ case is a non-starter because they bypassed Sadc — the regional body which is the Global Political Agreement guarantor.
Sadc, Charamba said, respects the Constitutional Court decision to hold elections on July 31.
“When MDC realised they have failed to stop elections through Sadc intervention they decided to go to AU. However AU cannot deal with the matter unless Sadc refers it to them. In this case, Sadc has respected the ruling of our courts” Charamba said.
