Querl’s calypso dream collapsing

CRICKET bowling sensation Glen Querl is unlikely to make it to the West Indies despite hitting top form that drew the attention of the selectors.

Report by Kevin Mapasure

Querl has been in sensational form for his franchise Matabeleland Tuskers and was expected to make the squad for Zimbabwe’s next tour in February.

He turned down a call to join the Zimbabwe ‘A’ squad, which has diminished his chance of getting a call for the West Indies.

He has also not committed to playing for Zimbabwe with speculation rife he wants to play for England.

Efforts to get a comment from Querl were unsuccessful as the player is out of the country on holiday.

Calls for the right-arm-medium pacer to be included in the Zimbabwe squad have amplified with each game but prospects look slim.

“There are a number of issues; the first is that he was included in the Zim ‘A’ squad earlier this year and turned down that chance to play,” said an insider. “Then the issue of him committing. He doesn’t look like he is interested in playing for Zimbabwe and there’s also the issue of his status because he holds a British passport.”

Querl has played club cricket for most of his career in England and recently represented the Unicorns where he has put in good performances.

His supporters would be disappointed to see his name missing from the squad to be selected next month after such a good outing this season.

Some of his better shows saw him taking seven wickets in Tuskers’ three-wicket win over Mid-West Rhinos in the Logan Cup, including a fiver in the first innings which came at the expense of just 24 runs.
He followed that up with five wickets in his team’s 10 wicket demolition of Southern Rocks.

His usefulness with the bat has also endeared him to the fans.
