A DIPLOMATIC row erupted on Thursday between Ecuador and Britain after the former granted WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange political asylum while London threatened to storm the Ecuador embassy to snatch the man who exposed sensitive American diplomatic cables.
On Zimbabwe, the explosive WikiLeaks cables exposed the divisions within Zanu PF after top-ranking government officials including Vice-President Joice Mujuru held secret meetings with American diplomats in Harare.
Apart from Mujuru, other senior Zanu PF officials named in WikiLeaks include Emmerson Mnangagwa, ministers and MPs who mostly demanded that Mugabe must go.
Mugabe’s health file and army secrets were also revealed in the cables.
The whistleblower website also quoted top MDC-T officials’ denigrating views about Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.
But Assange has been holed up at the Ecuadorean embassy in London from June 19 as he fled Swedish authorities who are seeking to prosecute him over allegations of rape.
Assange fears extradition to Sweden to face questioning about sexual assault allegations will facilitate his ultimate extradition to US on espionage charges which could attract a death penalty. — Staff Writer.
