Leading Ladies: A comedy with a twist

A COMEDY with a twist is on stage at Harare’s Reps Theatre until late July, giving audiences a chance to enjoy a good laugh as the winter season moves to its close.
Leading Ladies is a sparkling comedy written by American playwright Ken Ludwig and receives its first staging in Africa with this production, directed by Zane E Lucas. It is about a pair of out-of-work actors who hear a rich old lady wishes to leave her fortune to two long-lost nephews. They decide to pretend they are the relatives, but a complicated twist arises and the fun begins.
The Reps production stars Zoran Zec and Musa Saruro, along with Philippa Johnston, Chipo Chikara, Ryan Lawrence, Chloe Cattin, Michael Bawden and Itai Gurira. It runs until Saturday July 21, with 7pm performances most nights and a special additional matinée at 2.30pm on Saturday July 14. This is Lucas’ follow-up to Chapter Two, which he staged in April, and comes ahead of planning for his next production, the musical Hairspray.
Ludwig has had six shows on Broadway and six in the West End, and he has won two Laurence Olivier Awards, three Tony Award nominations, two Helen Hayes Awards and the Edgar Award. His work has been commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and has been performed in 30 countries in over 20 languages. Broadway and West End shows include Crazy For You, Lend Me A Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo, Twentieth Century; The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Treasure Island. Other major plays include Shakespeare in Hollywood among others.
His book, How To Teach Your Children Shakespeare, will be published this year by Crown Publishing. He studied music at Harvard with Leonard Bernstein and theatre history at Cambridge University in England.
