Simuka comedy festival marks first anniversary

SIMUKA Comedy Festival will next Friday celebrate its first anniversary at the Zimbabwe German Society.
The celebrations will see the line-up which includes South African-based Carl Joshua Ncube perform with the likes of Michael Kudakwashe, Simba the Comic King, Q the Boss, Uncle Sam, the multi-talented Cde Fatso, Clive Chigubu, General Ntando and Doc Vikela.
In an interview this week Victor Mpofu aka Doc Vikela said the event would celebrate the culmination of a year’s work.
“This will not just be the celebration of our birthday but we will be reflecting on the hard work, perseverance, disappointments, losses and growth,” said Doc Vikela.
“We will be looking at where the production team faced challenges in areas of marketing and followership. Today we all have grown with this mighty brand both artistically and spiritually. Simuka Comedy is here to stay.”
The stand up comedy genre has been gaining prominence in the past year thanks to Simuka Comedy’s proactive approach.
The major setback has however been the lack of funding as most corporate entities are still shying away from this burgeoning genre.
Simuka Comedy has revived the sector which at some point only had Edgar Langeveldt as the lone prominent figure in the industry.
Doc Vikela however said he was grateful to a few institutions and individuals that have shown faith in their work.
“We are here today because of institutions like Book Café, Alliance Francaise, the Zimbabwe German Society, Rooftop Promotions, Chido advertising initiative Arts (Bulawayo) not forgetting individuals like Daves Guzha, Tomas Brickhill, David Musabayana, and all the comics who have graced the platform,” he said.
