Amateurs take on Pros in tourney

LOCAL amateur golfers will have a chance to play with professionals in a Pro-Ams tournament ahead of the forthcoming Zimbabwe Open.

Corporates will put up teams of three amateurs with each side being allocated a professional.
The professionals will use the event to prepare for the Open.
“It gives the amateurs a chance to play with the pros,” said Henry Manzungu, spokesman for the Zimbabwe Open committee. “We are talking about 120 teams here on both days.”
The tournament will be held at Royal Harare Golf Club, the venue of the Open on April 19 and 20.
Manzungu said the R1, 2 million tournament, which is making a comeback on the Zimbabwe sporting calendar after a nine-year absence, can start any day.
“Everything is on course. Royal Harare is coming on nicely.”
Meanwhile, the committee has also announced the dates for the two pre-qualifying events. The first will be played between April 8-12 in South Africa and then Wing-gate in Harare on April 18.
The Zim Open is a top five tournament on the Sunshine Tour.
Top golfers who have confirmed participation include former winners, Zimbabwean Tony Johnstone and South Africans Jean Hugo and Darren Fichardt. — Staff Writer.
