Zimbabwe Hosts Basketball Tourney

ZIMBABWE will host a Zone 6 Under-16 boys’ and girls’ basketball tournament at Harare City Sports Centre from May 17-30.

Team manager Carlos Munda said they have been holding trials in the countries 10 provinces for the past three weeks and is convinced that this would help in building a competitive team.

“The final team will be chosen by a group of selectors on Friday after which the names will be sent to the International Basketball Federation  (FIBA) for accreditation,” Munda said.

The teams are training everyday; the boys are in Harare while the girls train in Bulawayo.

“Training will continues until the start of the tournament so that the players remain in form. I have no doubt the team will do well as the players are raring to go,” Munda said.  “We are expecting up to 10 countries from this region. So far eight have confirmed participation.”

Munda said there was no need to be afraid of the basketball powerhouses since it is the first time the tournament has been held at Under 16 level.

Munda said he had no doubt that the Angolans would bring a good team because they have a very strong senior side.

The winner of the tournament will qualify for the Under 16 Basketball African Youth Championships Mozambique.
