TOP Zimbabwean junior triathlete, Ashley Finaughty, raced to a brilliant fourth position at the Junior World Triathlon Championships from June 5 to 8 in Vancouover, Canada.
Racing in her last year in the junior category, and on the back of victories in adult women’s categories in Australia, where she is based, Finaughty capitalised on the unfriendly conditions to stay in touch with the leaders throughout the 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run.
An 11,2 degrees celsius swim and windy cold air conditions of 10 degrees celsius (the coldest June recorded in Canada) meant for a very tough race.
Great Britain’s Kirsty McWilliam won the event. The next African home was South Africa’s Vicky Van der Merwe in 16th position.
59 women started the race and 52 completed the event.
In the 2007 edition in Hamburg, Finaughty finished 21st. – Own correspondent.
