Terry Is A Natural Leader -Capello

ENGLAND coach Fabio Capello was impressed by the display of stand-in skipper John Terry against the United States.

“It made me happy, he is a good captain and it was a good performance,” said Capello after the 2-0 win at Wembley.

“I’m very happy because I saw from him on the pitch what I asked for before the game.

“John Terry is always John Terry, in good moments and bad. His charisma influences other players. He is a natural leader.”

Terry scored England’s opening goal to end a tough week for the Chelsea captain, who missed a crucial penalty in his club’s shoot-out defeat to Manchester United in the Champions League final. He was handed the armband for the first time under Capello, who is yet to make a decision on who his permanent captain will be.

Terry dedicated his header to the Chelsea fans who saw their dreams of a first ever European Cup win end in Russia.

“That goal was for all the supporters for last week,” he said. “It’s been a difficult period since what happened in Moscow but getting back into the routine has been a massive plus. I’m a big man and I can take it.”

Former England skipper David Beckham said the players had no doubts Terry will recover from his setback.

“We are not surprised as he has done it before. He does it every time he wears the shirt,” said Beckham.

“He’s still disappointed but when he steps onto the pitch you see the man he is.

“He is one of the strongest characters I have ever come across in football. He will be hurting for a while but he’s strong enough to get over this.

“Leading your country is one of the biggest honours you can get. JT has tackled and headed everything and he scored the goal. I think he deserved the goal.”

Beckham, who was earning his 101st cap for his country, has been impressed by the improvements under Capello.

“The progress is good,” he added. “He’s changing many things. It is a more serious approach to every game and training sessions. He does his job and the players know what he wants.”

Capello called the victory in his third game in charge a “step forward” and added: “The England team performed — all the players played very well.

“It was not easy to perform against the USA because they pressed a lot.

“But the team played like in training. The pressing and tackling were very good. We tried to win back the ball and we did this a lot of times.” — BBC Sport.
