HABIB Beye has warned his Newcastle United team-mates to be wary of wounded animal Benjani Mwaruwari ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Portsmouth at St James’s Park.
The Zimbabwe star may well be top scorer in the Englis
h Premier League so far this term, but the seven-goal striker was on the end of a Harry Redknapp roasting after missing a last-minute spot-kick at Fratton Park against West Ham.
Redknapp has been delighted with the player’s contribution this season, with the hitman having the least number of shots per goals in the Premier League so far this season.
But Benjani infuriated his boss when he pinched the ball off regular penalty taker Sulley Ali Muntari before fluffing his kick as Robert Green made a fine save.
Beye told the Chronicle (Newcastle): “I know Benjani will be a big threat.
“He is a very good player. We will need to be aware of him because he is having a good time this season.
“He isn’t the only player who can score goals, as they also have Kanu and John Utaka, who I played against in France when I was with Marseille.
“They have some great players.”
The only crumb of comfort United could take after Reading was the fact they go into the encounter against Pompey with an unbeaten home record still intact this season.
Beye added: “We must beat Portsmouth now because we lost at Reading.
“That is football — you have to recover straight away. Portsmouth are next and they are a very good team.” — Chronicle (Newcastle).
