Delta to launch sorghum lager

BEVERAGES manufacturer, Delta Corporation Ltd (Delta), through its beer concern, Natbrew, plans to launch a lager called “Eagle” that will be brewed using sorghum.

“>The lager is targeted at the lower end of the market and is expected to widen the range of lagers brewed by the company.

The lager is also different from traditional lagers that are brewed using barley.

Delta is brewing the new Eagle lager using sorghum because of the shortage of barley and a reduction in traditional beer consumption due to a collapse in disposable incomes.

There is currently a shortage of barley in the country due to high cost of production and Delta is using sorghum, which is drought-resistant.

Delta already operates a contract farming scheme for sorghum that is used to brew opaque beer.

In the company’s results for the year ended September 30, 2004, Delta chairman Robbie Mupawose said the company had made a decision to launch a sorghum-based clear beer.

He said they had already made the first payment to ensure the commencement of fabrication of the necessary imported capital equipment.

Delta is the holding company of Coca-Cola, Natbrew and Chibuku.

It is the brewer of lagers, which include Castle, Lion and Black Label, Pilsner, Bohlingers, Castle Lite and Zambezi. It also manufactures and bottles carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks.

Last year, Delta ventured into glass manufacturing after a shortage of the commodity had hit industry. – Staff Writer.
