Why can’t he just govern well?

ROBERT Mugabe is man of violence and has admitted as much. To those misguided individuals who believe he is a principled revolutionary with the interests of the povo at heart, I want to say a few words.

=”Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif”>While prime minister of this country in the early 1980s he unleashed the Fifth Brigade on the civilian population of Matabeleland and the Midlands.

Atrocities were committed against a helpless population. Bear in mind that this took place some two years into Independence.

Did Mugabe’s personality change in those two years? I strongly believe the answer is in the negative, which means that this “hero” of millions was always a heartless monster.

To his everlasting discredit, when evidence of these atrocities became too evident to ignore, he asserted that they were imperialist lies. As has become evident, he did not have the courage of his monstrous convictions and he simply lied to the nation.

He eventually excused his conduct by saying it was a moment of madness. One will note that no apology has been forthcoming.

This is the man who believes he has every right to rule over us. He continues to preside over atrocities in our country.

This is the man who is embraced with open arms at every opportunity by the presidents of South Africa and Nigeria.

Does this not make one question the moral standards of the two presidents? I can only conclude that their inexcusable conduct is a result of a vested interest in maintaining the status quo in Zimbabwe.

It is now apparent that we will only achieve true freedom throughout our own internal endeavours. The US and Europe have virtually washed their hands of us. Mugabe only has to mention the words racism, imperialism, colonialism and national sovereignty and those countries wring their hands and shut up.

What could be simpler in the art of retaining power than to govern well, with honesty, transparency, hard work and accountability? One would be reelected ad infinitum.
