Namate missed the point

YOUR cartoonist Tony Namate usually produces cartoons that are relevant, amusing and based on accurate observation of political, social and economic realities in Zimbabwe.

<
P>However, his recent effort (Independent, August 29) fell way below the standard we have come to expect.

The cartoon was headed “Dialogue of the deaf” and showed Morgan Tsvangirai and Robert Mugabe back to back assuming an old-fashioned duelling position.

Tsvangirai’s caption read: “You can only talk to me before October 1” and Mugabe’s stated: “You must repent first.”

“Gentlemen please!” was Namate’s comment.

Surely Tony Namate is not amongst those so ignorant of the causes of Zimbabwe’s crisis that they attribute blame equally between Zanu PF and the MDC?

That the MDC is even prepared to talk to Zanu PF shows an amazing willingness to “turn the other cheek” in the face of overwhelming evidence of Zanu PF’s determination to continue its ruinous policies and practices.

In case Namate needs reminding: Zanu PF is the problem, the MDC is the potential solution. Zanu PF is the cause of our misery and suffering, the MDC came into existence because of this misery and suffering.

Zanu PF has been in power for 23 years, the MDC as yet has not been in power. The suggestion that the Zimbabwean crisis is a result of the supposedly equal intransigence of Zanu PF and the MDC is simply mind-boggling in its stupidity.

This particular cartoon smacks more of the political double-speak and mental confusion of Jonathan Moyo than what we have come to expect of Tony Namate.

Perhaps Namate should take note of the heading for the article above his cartoon. It read: “Zim crisis: deal with the causes not symptoms.” Precisely.

The cause of the “Zim crisis” is simple. It is the misrule, in all its various manifestations, of Mugabe’s Zanu PF.

It is Zanu PF which is deaf (and dumb), Mr Namate. Their stupidity and greed should give any half-decent cartoonist enough material to last a lifetime.
