THANK you for printing the article “Zimbabwe headmaster, pupils braai pet giraffe” by Peter Thornycroft, (IndependentXtra October 8).
My wife and I were totally a
ppalled at the wanton and callous killing of a young pet giraffe by a member of the National Parks and braaing of its meat in front of school children.
As residents of that area many years ago, our children loved seeing the tame giraffe around Tod’s Hotel which would stand in the main road and look through the windows of cars. They were well known attractions.
We are sorry for the grief this has caused Gary and Thea Akeroyd and the West Nicholson community.
Please do your readers a big favour with a weekly update on the process of holding the killers accountable.
The parks, police and anyone else responsible need to be investigated by competent authorities and brought to book. They should also be reminded that compensation is provided for in the statutes – not that it would bring any relief to the Akeroyds.
